Service & Citizenship

Personal development through meaningful service experiences.

At the heart of all IB Programs lies a commitment to service and responsible action. All IB learners are encouraged to engage with their communities and take meaningful steps towards positive change. Aligned with the IB learner profile attributes and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, service and action in the IB programs are student-centered and age-appropriate, enabling students to engage in practical explorations through a cycle of inquiry, action, and reflection. Service and action help students to become caring individuals who strive to make a positive difference in their communities and the world at large.

In the PYP, the commitment to responsible action is rooted in a cycle of inquiry, action, and reflection, enabling students to explore meaningful connections between their learning and the world around them. Guided by the IB learner profile attributes and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, PYP students investigate real-world issues and reflect on ways they can create positive change within their communities. From participating in local environmental initiatives to supporting school-wide projects, PYP students develop empathy, collaboration, and perseverance. Through these experiences, they discover that even small actions can contribute to the well-being of others, fostering a more compassionate and connected world. During their final year in the PYP, students participate in the Exhibition, a culminating project that challenges them to apply their learning to address a real-world issue. In collaboration with peers, mentors, and community members, students engage in in-depth inquiry, take informed action, and present their findings, demonstrating their growth as globally-minded individuals committed to making a difference.

In the MYP, the commitment to responsible action is further exemplified through the concept of service as action, which builds upon the foundational idea of action in the PYP. Through their engagement with service as action, MYP students become more aware of their strengths and areas for growth, undertake challenges that develop new skills, and work collaboratively with others. Through service as action, MYP students not only deepen their understanding of their role within their communities but also develop the skills and attributes necessary to become active and empathetic global citizens.

One of students’ opportunities to take action in service of their community is the MYP community project. Undertaken during their Grade 9 year, the community project is a culmination of the MYP experience that empowers students to explore, inquire, and act upon real-world issues affecting their communities. Working independently or in small groups,  the community project engages students in sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to meaningful action in the community.

Community Service
Our students learn within a global context; there is a focus on service at school and home, in the community, to our country and in the world. Our school community models for our students the importance and value of community service. We have a strong commitment from our families, who volunteer to support our school and students, as well as community initiatives.
Yearbook Design Team
The yearbook club offers students in grades 11-12 the opportunity to develop their visual communication skills by creating the annual yearbook publication. With guidance from teachers, students gain hands-on experience in visual design, photography, teamwork, copyrighting, and budgeting. This club provides a valuable platform for students to explore and strengthen their portfolios while contributing to the school community.
