Daily attendance will continue to be taken and all visitors to our school as well as TOC’s and parents will be encouraged to adhere to best respiratory etiquette, strong hand hygiene, they shall be encouraged to be vaccinated, and to respect the personal space of others.  The school environment is a place of respect which honours the varying comfort level for communicable diseases. The wearing of a mask is a personal choice that will be supported in our school environment. 

Ventilation & Air Exchange

When using air conditioners and fans in ventilated spaces, air should be moved from high places to lower places instead of blowing air directly from one person’s breathing zone to another’s. Avoid horizontal cross breezes. Use of portable air conditioners and fans in unventilated spaces with doors and windows closed should be avoided, except when necessary during high or excessive heat events. 

Clayton Campus: All classes have HEPA filters. Building is equipped with a built-in HVAC system.  Windows and doors will be opened whenever possible. 

Cloverdale Campus: Windows and doors will be open at the teachers discretion and all classrooms have HEPA filters.

Diamond Campus: Windows and doors will be open at the teachers discretion.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Regular cleaning in the evenings (thorough) will continue each evening. Throughout the day, front office staff/admin will wipe down frequently-touched surfaces. Teachers will have disinfectant wipes in their classrooms and teachers will encourage students to wipe down their desks throughout the day. Thorough cleaning of not easily cleaned items will be completed each term.

Surfaces touched by fewer people (e.g.. Desks used by a few students, lockers, manipulatives) should be cleaned at least 1x/day. Other general cleaning should occur in line with regular practices.

Objects made of materials that are not easily cleaned (e.g., foam, playdough, etc.) or typically cleaned intermittently (e.g., fabrics, soft toys, etc.) can continue to be used. They should be cleaned (if possible) according to regular practices.

Textbooks, paper, other paper-based products, laminated or glossy paper-based products and items with plastic covers do not need to be cleaned and disinfected, or quarantined for any period of time.

Cleaning and Disinfection

Frequently-touched surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected at least 1x/day and when visibly dirty. These include items touched by larger numbers of people (e.g., door handles, hand rails, tap faucets, shared gym equipment, etc.).

Protocols for cleaning and disinfection of body fluids after a symptom of an illness are posted for our caretaker, and for our administrative staff. 

• Wear disposable gloves
• Wash hands before wearing and after removing gloves
• Use appropriate PPE for blood, and bodily fluids
• Disinfect with appropriate cleaning products

Gatherings & Events

Schools can now follow normal practices for welcoming visitors and the community use of schools. Visitors, including parents, should adhere to best practices of hand washing, respiratory etiquette, and ensuring that they conduct a health check on themselves before coming to the school building.

Curriculum, Programs, and Activities

Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities can be reinstated with special attention given to respiratory etiquette, hand hygiene, and cleaning protocols for specified equipment. In addition, students and faculty who choose to wear a mask will be able to have autonomy for this choice in any activity in our school. 

Field Trips

CHA teachers will discuss all off site trips with their respective coordinators and complete a risk-management form which will include a communicable disease prevention plan.  Buses will be used for transportation on field trips; parent drivers must have a criminal record check on file in our office, and a driver’s abstract from ICBC. 

Bus Transportation

If buses are used for field trips, students will practice hand hygiene before and after the trip, will spread out if there are empty seats available, and will open windows (weather dependent). Mask use continues to be a personal choice. 

Community Use of Schools

Clayton Campus: CHA Communicable Disease Safety Plan will be communicated with Jericho Centre for protocols to be followed for shared spaces.

Cloverdale Campus: CHA Communicable Disease Safety Plan will be communicated with Traditional Learning Academy for protocols to be followed for shared spaces.

Water Fountains

Water fountains can be fully utilized.

Daily Health Checks

CHA staff sign in book will contain a consent of health check at the top and by signing in, staff will acknowledge they are not exhibiting any symptoms of illness. 

Parents/Guardians will be asked to check students for symptoms at home of illness at home, before coming to school. 

Daily Health Check

School administrators should ensure that staff, other adults entering the school, parents, caregivers and students are aware that they should not come to school if they are sick. School administrators can support this practice by regularly communicating the importance of everyone doing a daily health check.

A daily health check means a person checking daily to ensure they (or their child) are not experiencing any symptoms of illness (including but not limited to COVID-19 symptoms) before coming to school. Daily health checks can be supported by the BCCDC resource when to get tested for COVID-19 or the Ministry of Education’s K-12 Health Check. Schools do not need to confirm a daily health check has been done or monitor students and staff for symptoms of illness. 

Nobody should come to school if they are sick or otherwise directed to self-isolate by public health.

Stay Home When Sick and What to Do When Sick

Staff and students will be reminded to stay home when sick and will be aware of the protocol to follow if this is the case.

Symptoms Develop at School

Any person who develops symptoms at school will be isolated and sent home. Any students who report symptoms throughout the day will go directly to the office for a temperature check and an overview of symptoms. If they have a temperature over 37 degrees or exhibit symptoms, their parents/guardians will be called to pick them up and they will be asked to be isolated from the main reception area. (Sick Room in Cloverdale, Back Office in Clayton). 

As an independent school, we will notify FISA and the COVID Response team for any exposure to our school, and work in conjunction with the Fraser Health Authority for contact tracing. 

Returning to School After Illness

No medical note will be necessary for a person (student or staff member) to return to school.

However, if anyone is having difficulty controlling their bodily fluids, they should not return(eg. runny nose). If these symptoms can be controlled, they are welcome to return, but if we notice that these symptoms present a potential communicable spread, we will call parents to come and pick up their child. 

Hand Hygiene & Respiratory Etiquette

All sinks throughout the school will be regularly checked for soap and paper towels to support hand hygiene.

Masks

The decision to wear a mask is a personal one, based on individual preference. Anyone choosing to wear a mask as a measure of personal protection will be respected at our school.  Masks are available at the office and in classrooms for any students who forget their own and would like to wear one. 

Personal Prevention Practices

Personal prevention practices will be supported through signs in bathrooms and classrooms, and measures such as hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette will be reviewed in classes and through assemblies.

Personal Space

Staff and students will be encouraged to consider and respect others personal space and it will be acknowledged that not everyone has the same personal space needs. 

Positive & Inclusive Approaches

CHA will encourage all students to be inclusive to others and respect others needs in regards to personal space.

Music Classes/PE Classes:

Shared equipment will be cleaned once per day as per the guidelines in the Cleaning and Disinfecting section. Students are encouraged to practice proper hand hygiene before and after equipment use. Equipment that touches the mouth (musical instrument mouth pieces, etc) cannot be used unless they are disinfected in between uses. 

Students will practice hand hygiene before and after play on the playground, this will occur in the classroom before going outside and upon returning to the classroom.  Students will respect that people have different comfort levels with physical contact between themselves and others.

Students will be able to utilize the library but will practice hand hygiene when entering and leaving the space.  Books will no longer be quarantined between check outs.

There are three types of school closures: Health Closure, Functional Closure, and Transportation Closure. 

1. Health Closure: This is determined by the Fraser Health in conjunction with the Ministry of Education (through FISA) and is related to Covid case counts in a school
2. Functional Closure: This is determined when a school does not have the required level of teachers or relevant staff required to teach, supervise, or clean to ensure the safety of the students or staff. This decision is made in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (through FISA). 
3. The following may be used as strategies to accommodate staff shortages:

• • TOC’s:  if available and within budget constraints
  • Internal coverage: Teachers, VP’s/HOS help cover classes, student support or library may be cancelled, specialist classes may be cancelled
  • If classes can be combined, then we will combine
  • Cancel collaborative planning
  • Classes may be cancelled- if we do not have enough teachers. Eg: no kindergarten, and then online instruction will commence. 
  • If we cannot ensure the safety of all students with limited staff, then the school can declare a functional closure (in conjunction with the Ministry of Education)

All teachers will be aware of the potential need to ensure that all students can follow on Toddle with the daily activities of the class. Therefore Toddle posts will require much more clarity, instructions  and potential links to learning activities.
